Q

oldest surviving museum

A

This special building, which lies between Radcliffe Square and Broad Street is the University’s Museum of the History of Science, was established in 1683 with the dual purpose of teaching science on the lower floors and containing Ashmole’s new museum above.

It is the world’s oldest surviving purpose-built museum. Possibly the best-known exhibit here is the blackboard used by Albert Einstein in
his lecture at Rhodes House in 1931, to explain his theory of relativity. His chalked equations have been preserved intact.
