Universal Precaution Flashcards
Set of methods used to control and prevent the spread of disease
Infection control
Are caused by pathogens (germs)
Infections
Disease spread from one person to another
Communicable disease
Disease caused by a pathogen (germ or bacteria)
Infectious disease
Means dirty, soiled, unclean
Contaminated
Cleaning so that germs (pathogens) are destroyed
Disinfection
The way germs are passed from one person to another
Mode of transmission
Membranes that line body cavities that open to the outside of the body
Mucous membranes
Tears, saliva, sputum (mucous coughed up) urine, feces, semen, vaginal secretions, pus or other wound drainage, blood
Body fluids
Coughing, sneezing, laughing, spitting, talking
Droplets
Any body opening of an uninfected person which allows pathogen to enter
Portal of entry
Who are at risk in infections
Ppl who are low in resistance
Age, existing illness, fatigue, stress
Are infection control guidelines designed to protect workers from exposure to diseases spread by blood and certain body fluids
Universal precautions
What can i do to prevent the spread of infection
Good hand washing
Use alcohol based hand cleaner
When should i use gloves?
Performing or helping with mouth care
When in contact with body fluids
Cuts, open sores
What is bloodborne pathogen
Microorganism that are present in blood
Or
Other Potentially Infectious Materials
- semen, vaginal secretion
- body fluid
(Blood or OPIM)
Common BB pathogen diseases
Human immunodeficiency virus
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis C
Virs that leads to aids
HIV human immunodeficiency virus
Attacks the immune system
HIV
Symptoms of HIV
Fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, chronic fatigue, skin rash or lesion
HIV transmission
Sexual contact
Sharing needes or syrine
Breast feeb
Needle sticks
More contagious that HIV, can live for 7+ days in dried blood
Hepatitis B - no cure but there is a preventative vaccine
Symptoms of hepatitis B
Fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, pain, vomiting and jaundice
Can cause chronic liver disease and death, symptoms are similar to hepa B and it can be recognized years b4 symptoms are showned
Hepatitis C
How BBP are not transmitted
Coughing
Sneezing
Touching
