Universal Gravitation Flashcards
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation
every particle in the universe attracts every other particle in the universe with a force directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the distance between them
Principle of Superposition
for several masses, the total effect is the sum of the individual effects
Kepler’s First Law
all planets move in elliptical orbits, with the Sun at one focus
Kepler’s Second Law
the radius vector drawn from a sun to a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal time intervals - consequence of angular momentum
Kepler’s Third Law
the square of the orbital period of any planet is proportional to the cube of the semimajor axis of the elliptical orbit
Aphelion
point on orbit furthest from Sun
Perihelion
point on orbit nearest Sun
