CBD
Central Business District. Main business/commercial area of a city
Range
The max distance people will travel for a service
Threshold
Minimum amount of people required to support a service
Market Area/Hinterland
The area surrounding a central place
Central Place Theory
Explains location of services/settlements and their distribution patterns according to their number, size, and range. Also explains the most profitable location for a service.
Gravity Model
Model that shows the ideal location of a service being determined by a locations pop and inversely related to the distance needed to travel for the service.
Bid Rent Theory
Price/demand for land changes the farther you move from a CBD
Squatters
People who live in a place they have no legal claim to.
LDC- Outside of city
MDC- Sometimes close to CBD
Intensive Agriculture
Requires less land but more capital and labor. A lot of input and high yields
Extensive Agriculture
Requires more land but less capital and labor. One crop, lower yields.
Desertification
Land that used to be good for agriculture is turned into a desert
Double cropping
Planting two different crops in the same field. One in winter, one in summer.
Crop rotation
Rotating crops during different seasons
Slash and Burn
Cutting down crops then burning them
Value Added Crops
Crops a farmer can change in some way to make more money
