Redlining
Financial institutions draw red lines on a map. They refuse to lend money people would use to purchase or improve properties in the red lines. Outlawed in 1968
Blockbusting
When real estate agents convince white people to sell their houses to them at low prices so they can sell them for a bunch of money to minorities. Out of fear that non-white people would move into the neighborhood.
White Flight
White people migrating from areas becoming more racially/ethnically diverse
Apartheid
Legal separations of races into different areas in South Africa. Ended 1991
Voting District
Districts in US states that are organized for democratic representation. Determined by population.
Redistricting
Redrawing district boundaries as population changes.
Gerrymandering
Redrawing district boundaries to give an advantage or disadvantage to a political party.
Supranational Organization
A multinational union. Member countries give up some authority and sovereignty for the good of the union.
Balkanization
A country breaking up into smaller countries [amung different ethnic lines]
Enclave
Landlocked territory surrounded completely by another territory.
Exclave
Portion of a country’s territory is disconnected from the rest of the country. ISLANDS DO NOT COUNT
Self Determination
Concept that ethnicities have the right to govern themselves
Ethnonationalism
Being loyal to a particular ethnic/racial group and not a nation
Nationalism
Being loyal to a nation, especially to the exclusion/detriment of other nations.
Ethnic Cleansing
Policy designed to remove an ethnicity or religion group. Violent/terror inspiring.
