Q
Oregon
A
- Mainly Willamet valley
- known for PN
- ocean breezes seeping through the gaps in the mountains
someone protected from the pacifics influences - rain during the winter, long dey summerss w/ ample sinshine
cooler evenings great for ripening situation on the vines - Sauv Blanc not good here because it’s longer ripening and the threat of autumn rains loom
- this is why it’s best for PN which is early ripening
- vintages can be pretty variable on yields, much like burgindy
- vineyards on hills where soils are less fertile and less risl of frost
- rich, red iron soil known as jory (state soil)

Q
Washington
A
- mainly columbia valley
- south eastern corner of the state
- soils of volcanic, alluvial ranging from silt to gravel to sand due to the floods
- more sunshine hours during the growing season than CA
- an important factor in intensifying the flavor of grapes
- valley lies in a rain shadow caused by the Cascades which contributes to it’s dry continental climate
- hot days by cool nights
- long and even growing period
- irrigation is necessary
- need to use turbines to get air circulating to prevent the vines from freezing
- one good thing is the cold staves off the phyloxera
- 40k acres under vine
