Unit3 AOS1 - Fields and Interactions Flashcards
Monopole
Object which is either:
- source of a field
OR
- sink of a field
Dipole
Object which is both:
- source of a field
AND
- sink of a field
Static Fields
Fields that are not changing over time
(stationary magnet)
Changing Fields
Fields that are changing over time
(e.g. magnet in motion)
Uniform Fields
Fields that have a consistent strength & directional at all points
Non-Uniform Fields
Fields where the strength and direction depends on its location
Magnetic Field Lines (direction of flow and rules)
Flow from the North to the South Pole
Never touch or cross each other
How to find the direction of the magnetic fields around current carrying wires
Use the Right Hand Grip Rule
Thumb - indicates direction of current
Curled Grip - indicates direction of the field lines
How to find the direction of the magnetic fields around loops of wires
Use the Right Hand Coil Rule
Thumb - represents the orientation of the current source
Curled Fingers - represents the current and direction of each loop
How to find the direction of the magnetic fields around Solenoids
Use the Right Hand Coil Rule
Thumb - represents the orientation of the current source
Curled Fingers - represents the current and direction of each loop
