Cultural Adaptation
A process by which individuals learn the rules and customs of new cultural contexts.
Culture region
The core-periphery idea that the core houses main economic power of region and the outlying region or periphery houses lesser economic ties
Cultural Realm
A collective of culture regions sharing related culture systems; a major world area having sufficient distinctiveness to be perceived as a set apart from other realms in terms of cultural characteristics and complexes.
Cultural landscape
The visible imprint of human activity on the landscape
Cultural ecology
The study of human environmental relationships
Cultural Identity
One’s belief in belonging to a group or certain cultural aspect
Innovation adoption
Study of how why and at what rate new technology spreads throughout a culture
Maladaptive diffusion
Diffusion of a process with negative side effects or What works well in one region may not in another
Cultural Relativism
Principle of regarding the beliefs, values, and practices of a culture from the viewpoint of that culture itself. The principle is sometimes practiced to avoid cultural bias in research, as well as to avoid judging another culture by the standards of one’s own culture.
Culture
The body of customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits that together constitute a group of people’s distinct tradition.
Sequence Occupancy
Refers to the impact different cultures have on a geographic location. The term refers to the shift from agrarian to urban culture. It can also apply to the influence of cultures that displace another culture, such as European immigration to North America displacing native populations. Refers to such cultural succession and its lasting imprint proposed by Derwent Whittlesey.
Uniform (Formal region)
An area in which everyone shares in one or more distinctive characteristics
Functional (Nodal) Culture Region
Region organized at a node or focal point
Vernacular (perceptual-regional self-awareness) Culture Region
A place that people believe exists as part of their cultural identity
Ethnocentrism
Belief in the inherent superiority of one’s own ethnic group or culture. A tendency to view alien groups or cultures from the perspective of one’s own.
