Unit Two - Population Flashcards
what is crude death rate ? (CDR)
the total number of deaths in a year for every 1,000 people alive in the society
what is crude birth rate ? (CBR)
the total number of live births in a year for every 1,000 people alive in the society
what is cohort ?
a group of people that characteristics them as a group ; age, sex, race.
what is dependency ratio ?
the number of people too old and too young to work compared to the number of people that are in their productive years.
what is demographic transition ?
the process of change in a society’s population from high crude birth and crude death rates and low natural increase rate to a condition of low crude birth and crude death and a low natural increase rate resulting in higher population.
HIGHbirth+HIGHdeath+LOWnat.inc. ->
LOWbirth+LOWdeatg+LOWnat.inc. =
higher total population
what is doubling time ?
the number of years needed to double a population, assuming a constant rate of natural increase.
what is ecumane ?
the portion of earth surface occupied by permanent human settlement.
who is Thomas Malthus ?
an english geographer/economist that theorized that there were too much people and not enought food to sustain everyone.
what is sex ratio ?
the number of males per 100 females.
what are the four major population clusters ?
East Asia, South Asia, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
what are four sparsely populated regions ?
dry land, wet land, cold land, high land.
what is non-ecumane ?
the portion of earths surface not occupied by permanent human settlement.
what is arable land ?
land suited for farming.
what are the three ways density can be calculated ?
arithmetic density, physiological density, and agricultural density.
what is density ?
the number of people occupying an areas of land.
what is arithmetic density ?
the total number of people divided by the total land area.
people/land area
what is physiological density ?
the number if people divided by a unit area of arable land.
people/arable land
what is agricultural density ?
the ratio of the number of farmers to the amount of arable land.
farmers/arable land
what is natural increase rate ? (NIC)
the percentage by which a population grows in a year.
%ofCBR-%ofCDR
what is total fertility rate ? (TFR)
the average number of children a woman will have throughout her childbearing years. (15-49)
what is a population pyramid ?
a populations pyramid normally shows the percentage of the total population in three layers, with the youngest group (0-14) at the base of the pyramid and the oldest group at the top. males are usually on the left side and females on the right.
