Unit Two Flashcards
Environmental
Biodegradable
That it has the ability to decompose naturally and harmlessly. So-called biodegradable packaging helps limit the number of harmful chemicals that are released into the atmosphere.
Biodiversity
The number and variety of plant and animal species that exist in a particular environmental area or in the world in general, or the problem of preserving and protecting it.
Climate change
Changes to long standing climate patterns due to increasing average global temperatures
Deforestation
The felling of trees in a large area; destruction of forests by people. Deforestation is destroying large areas of rainforest.
Desertification
The process by which the land becomes desert.
Natural resources
Things like minerals, forests, coal, etc. that exist in a place and can be used by people. Some natural resources, such as natural gas and fossil fuels, cannot be replaced.
Nonrenewable energy
sources that will run out or will not be replenished in our lifetimes—or even in many, many lifetimes.
Renewable energy
It describes a form of energy that can be produced as quickly as it is used. Renewable energy sources such as wind and wave energy.Na
Sustainable development
A development that is causing little or no harm to the environment and can therefore continue for a long time.
Carbon footprint
a measurement of the amount of carbon-dioxide a person adds to the atmosphere
Toxic
an adjective used to describe the environment that is contaminated with pollutants and other hazardous substances. This could include a polluted river, a contaminated lake, or a toxic waste site.
Ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Species
- : a class of things of the same kind and with the same name : kind. 2. : a category of living things that ranks below a genus, is made up of related individuals able to produce fertile offspring, and is identified by a two-part scientific name.
Pollution
the presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects.
Sustainability
Sustainability
Light pollution significantly impacts the environment, affecting biodiversity and disrupting ecosystems. Excessive artificial lighting can interfere with the natural behaviors of species, such as nesting patterns of birds and mating rituals of insects, thereby threatening their survival. This type of pollution also contributes to the larger issue of climate change, as the energy used in unnecessary lighting often comes from nonrenewable energy sources, increasing the carbon footprint. To address these issues, promoting sustainable development practices that incorporate energy-efficient lighting solutions and reduce toxic emissions is crucial. By focusing on reducing light pollution, we can support biodiversity, enhance sustainability, and mitigate the broader environmental impacts associated with our energy consumption.
- According to the paragraph, how does light pollution contribute to climate change?
By using energy from nonrenewable sources (correct answer)
By reducing the carbon footprint
By increasing the natural behaviors of species
By enhancing biodiversity
