internationalism
the idea that all members of the global community accept collective responsibility for the challenges that face the world and that motives of nations and nation-states must be respected in the search of solutions.
global citizenship
when individuals feel united by the “bonds of common humanity”, and act to bring about positive change in the world
isolationism
when a country completely opts out of participating in international social, economic, political, and military affairs.
unilateralism
when a country takes actions on the world stage on their own.
bilateralism
when two countries are motivated by the same issue or need, and work together on the world stage to address the issue.
multilateralism
when more than two countries work together on a specific issue.
supranationalism
when a country agrees to abide by the decisions on an international organization made up of independent appointed officials or representatives elected by the member states.
economic sanctions
action of cutting off trade with a country in an effort to force it to follow a particular source of actions.
collective security
the condition of protecting all members of a collective from danger.
peacekeeping
when soldiers, serving under the banner and authority of the UN, are stationed in a combat zone to prevent two sides from engaging in hostilities after a cease fire has been established.
foreign aid
when nation-states give money to NGOs, international organizations or other countries in an attempt to address humanitarian or environmental crises.
tied aid
foreign aid that is given, but under certain conditions. For example, the requirement of protecting human rights and democratization could be conditions of countries to meet if they are to be given aid
voluntary balkanization
the separation of like minded people into isolated groups that are hostile to people whose values differ from their own.
responsibility to protect
a belief that the UN must defend people when a sovereign government fails to uphold the rights and welfare of their own citizens.
common human heritage
the cultural inheritance from the past that all people share and this is preserved in world heritage sites, traditional skills and knowledge, and the arts.
