Unit Three: Iceland Flashcards
Bathymetric
A topographic map of the ocean floor
Biomass
The total quantity or weight of organisms in a given area or volume
Biome
An area classified according to the species that live in that location
Consumer
An organism that eats/takes in/consume other organisms for nutrition/to obtain their energy
Conduction
The transfer of heat energy between solids, via vibration of atoms
Convection
Energy transfer in fluids, in a circular nature, via density differences
Endemic species
A species that is native and isolated to certain small geographic range/area
Erosion
The movement/displacement of sediments/earth materials previously weathered, via wind water and gravity
Extrusive
A type of igneous rock formed aboveground, from lava, outside the volcano
Felsic
A type of mineral rich in Al, Si, light in color, low in density
Habitat
A location where species live; where an organism makes its home
Hot Spot
Volcanic location caused by a weak spot in the Earth’s crust, fed by the underlying mantle, that is comparatively hotter than the surrounding mantle and crust
Joule
An SI unit of heat/energy measurement
Keystone Species
A species that forms the foundation of an ecosystem; many other species depend on it. If they are removed, the ecosystem would change drastically
Kilowatt Hour
A non SI unit of energy, equal to 3.6 megajoules, which is the energy delivered by one kilowatt of power for one hour
Law of 10%
A law/rule that states that only 10% of energy is transferred to the trophic level above it in the food chain via consumption
Mafic
Rich in Mg and Fe, dark in color, high density
Magma
Molten rock that has not yet breached the surface/crust of the earth, mineral rick and contains water
Mid-Ocean ridge
Series of volcanos that mark a divergent boundary
Peat Bog
Wet, spongy ground of decomposing vegetation
producer
An organism that creates its own energy, through either photosyntheis or chemosynthesis. The basis for all food chains.
Sulfer Dioxide (SO2)
A colorless gas produced by the burning of fossil fuels and ores.
Trophic Level
-Steps in an ecological pyramid, where transfer of food and energy take place from one organism to another
-different bands/levels of the food chain, divided by energy storage and consumption.
Tundra
A vast, flat, cold, treeless region, in the arctic of Europe, Asia, and North America, in which the subsoil is permanently frozen (permafrost). Characterized by low biomass and cold temperatures
