What happened in act 1 scene 1,2,3
Witches make a plan to visit macbeth
Norwegian king pleads for peace and the thane of cawdor is captured
Witches are casting a spell while macbeth and banquo arrive and they hail macbeth with 3 titles then the prophecy that banquo’s children will become kings witches vanish
Witches prophecy
Macbeth is already thane of glamis but will become thane of cawdor then finally king
Banquos children will become kings
What happens in act 1 scene 4 and 5
B&M join the rest of Duncan’s party. Duncan thanks them both for their part in the battle and announces that his eldest son, Malcolm, will inherit the throne from him when he dies.
LM reads a letter from M in that letter he tells her the witches prophecy and how he plans the king but she is worried that he doesn’t have it in him too to sh emight have to bring out the inner monster in her
stars hide your fires let not light see my black and deep desires
Macbeth is clearly worried by the strength of his own ambition which he refers to as black and deep desires. He knows there will be obstacles in his way but is determined to get round them. He just hopes that nobody will see what he is up to which is why he wants the stars to stop shining.
Act 1 scene 6 and 7
Duncan arrives at macbeth castle
Duncan is full of compliments for lady macbeth
Banquo praises macbeth’s home
King compliments macbeth
Macbeth decides not to kill the king throughout this whole scene he is feeling indecisive the king is also a cousin, and given him thane of cawdor
Act 2 scene 1,2,3
- Banquo dream about the 3 sisters and macbeth hallucinates a bloody dagger
in his soliloquy he revels his state of mind his intentions and talks about bloody dagger - Macbeth returns from killing duncan but forgets to leave murder weapon at the crime scene
- Macbeth tells them king is sleeping macduff goes to wake up king and screams bloody murder LM pretends to be shocked and faints Macbeth kills guards
- Macduff and Lennox thinks guards commited murder or the sons of Duncan who fled the country Macbeth named king
LM and M reactions to the king death
Macbeth is feeling remorse and panic while LM tells him to go wash the blood off of his hands and she seems unphased by the murder
Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand
Quote about blood M is feeling such guilt that all the oceans in the world wouldn’t be capable of washing the blood from his hands
Unnatural events in scene 4 act 1
Horses uncontrolled and eating eachother, light and dark reversed
There’s daggers in men’s smiles
In this line, Donalbain is saying that he and his brother Malcolm are not safe if they stay where they are. That the men who smile at them are actually concealing daggers, wanting their blood.
Act 3 scene 1,2,3
- M and LM invite banquo to a supper banquo and his son go riding but will come back in time
2.Macbeth is plagued by fears about potential threats and ‘terrible dreams’. He envies Duncan who ‘sleeps well’ in his grave. Lady Macbeth encourages Macbeth to put on a brave face for his guests that evening.
3.A third man joins the two whom Macbeth has already sent to kill Banquo and Fleance. The three assassins manage to kill Banquo. Fleance escapes.
Act 3 scene 4,5,6
- Host for scottish thanes Sees banquo’s ghost
5.Hecate, the Goddess of Witchcraft, is angry with the witches for giving prophecies to Macbeth without consulting her. She tells them to meet her in the morning where they will tell Macbeth his ‘destiny’
6.Macduff fled to meet with malcolm to over throw macbeth with the king of england because they are suspicious of him
How does the banquet scene show the effect of guilt on the human mind
Macbeth lost it at a dinner because the ghost of banquo came to haunt him then he began to question what was a hallucination and wasnt
How does LM react to M behaviour
She tries to calm him down and kicked all guests out so he doesn’t accidentally say something about the murder
