UNIT STUDY: DNA and Organization Flashcards
What are nucleic acids?
Macromelcules made up for nucelotide monomers
What is part of a nucleotide?
Ribose sugar + base + phosphate group
Are nucleotides positively or negitvley charged and why?
Negitively charged due to negitive oxygens in phosphate group
What are the four nitrogonous bases in DNA
- Thymine
- Adenine
- Guanine
- Cytosine
What are the four nitrogonous bases in RNA
-Uracil
- Adenine
Guanine
Cytosine
What are purines vs pyrimidines
Purines - double ringed (A and G)
Pyrimidines - single ringed (C, T, and U)
What is the structure of DNA
DNA has a double helix structure with H bonds holding the nitrgonous bases together. The ends are anti-parrallel (going in oppisate directions)
What bases bond together
Pyrimidines bond with purines
- G forms 3 H bonds with C
- A forms 2 H bonds with T
What bases bond together
Pyrimidines bond with purines
- G forms 3 H bonds with C
- A forms 2 H bonds with T
Prokaryotic vs Eykaryotic DNA
- Prokaryotic DNA is found in the cytoplasm, and often super coiled
- Eukaryotic DNA is found in the nucleas
What are plasmids?
Circuluar DNA molecules that carry extra genetic information such as antibiotic resistance
