Creeping barrage. Artiller was shot ahead to make the other side think we missed, but we crept forward in the smoke. This continued until the Canadians reached the other side.
Who was Thomas Scott? What was his impact?
One of Riel’s prisoners during the Red River Rebellion. He incited violence against Riel and the Metis. Riel had him executed for this, one of Riel’s negative legacies. The Globe wrote about it and called for Riel to be hanged. A bounty was out for Riel’s capture.
What were Riel’s long term impacts?
Manitoba was created (originally a Metis state). Riel stood up for minority rights.
Negative: Riel killed Thomas Scott. Many people died in his second rebellion.
Who was Gabriel Dumont?
Expert hunter and sharpshooter. He wanted to pursue the retreating police at Duck Lake but Riel thought it was foolish.
What does CPR stand for?
Canadian Pacific Railroad.
What role did the Railroad play in the North West Rebellion.
Allowed many troops to be delivered. Vital to defence. The Rebellion saved the CPR which destroyed the rebellion.

Riel’s secretary. Loyal to Riel, wanting to share his fate (put in an asylum, but Riel was hanged).

Riel didn’t want to be thought of as mad because that would discredit his thoughts. Riel surrendered because he wanted to be known as defensive not aggressive. He was tried with High Treason by John A (guaranteeing his death if he lost). Verdict was guilty with recommendation for mercy (mercy was ignored).
How did Riel’s execution hurt John A?
The French disliked Riel’s execution, so the Conservative Party lost support. If he didn’t hang Riel then he might lose support in Ontario.
What was the Pacific Scandal? Impacts?
John A and Cartier were paid $300,000 by Sir Hugh Allen (who owned the Railroad company).

Asians were not wanted (justification was they came from a different climate and farmed different things).
Ukrainians were especially wanted (They were used to the climate and farmed similar things).
Asians were paid less but did more work (or more dangerous work).
Ukrainians were divided to prevent them from retaining their culture.

He “sifted” the immigrants for certain people (didn’t want Asians).

Immigrants - Were promised a new life, but were treated poorly once the war was over (they were no longer "needed"). Veterans - Risked their lives only to lose their jobs to immigrants. Government - Revolution must be stopped, the working class cannot rule the ruling class.
What did the workers (immigrants) want during the Winnipeg General Strike?
Living wages. Paid holidays. Unionizing Rights. Equal Work Equal Pay. Fair Bargaining. Shorter working days.
