Separation of powers
The idea that the powers of government should be split between two or more strongly independent branches to prevent any one person or group from gaining too much power
The powers of Congress are split between the legislative judicial and executive branch
Majority rule
The idea of the decisions approved by more than half of the people in a group or society will be accepted and observed by all people
Majority rule is applied in the system of voting for president

Congress checks the power of president by having the ability to veto any propositions the president may make and the president vice versa
Federalism
Federalism is a political system in which power is divided between a central government and smaller regional governments
The US is example at the central government level abortion is the ability to be illegal however the California government chooses to still make abortion legal
Judicial review
The power of the courts to declare laws and executive acts unconstitutional
The Supreme Court side to rule the act of abortion is unconstitutional
Civil liberties
Basic freedoms guaranteed under the US Constitution such as freedom of speech and freedom of religion
Freedom of religion freedom of speech freedom of press and the guarantee of a fair unbiased trial
Civil rights
Civil rights guarantees of equal rights and equal treatment under the law so just trial by jury in voting rights
The right to a public education the right to gainful employment the right to housing the right to use public facilities in freedom of religion
Bill of rights
The Bill of Rights is the first 10 amendments of the constitution spells out American rights in relation to the government guarantees civil rights and liberties to the individual
Expressed powers
Expressed powers given specifically to the national government by the US Constitution also known as the enumerated or delegated powers
The power to declare war is given to the national government specifically the POTUS by the US Constitution
Gerrymandering
The drawing of boundaries of legislative district with the intent of giving one party or group of significant advantage
Drawing the district political lines so republicans(or democrats) or just rich white people have the advantage

Redistricting is the process of redrawing the geographic boundaries of legislative districts after a census to reflect population changes
