What is Chattel slavery?
-a race based and inherited system of slavery introduced by the portugese

Its a dry and arid region, so primarily nomadic societies were formed, for maixmum resource access

-mized hunter gatherer and agricultural societies
What were the goals behind european exploration of the americas?
-god. converting people to christianity was billed as a major reason to go explore, especially by the spanish. but the puritans and the separatists also went for religious reasons, though later on
-glory. explorers went in search of personal glory, but here was also glory to be had on the international level, as nations jockeyed for access to resources and power. In the case of england, there was the fear of the Black Legend– spain’s power
-gold, the pursuit of wealth by individuals and nations. But also just individuals who wanted access to economic opportunity that they wouldn’t get back home, in heavily settled England

What was the Joint stock company?
-an early form of economic organization which allowed individuals to pool their resources to fund a business venture, like the establishment of a colony, and an early example of shifting towards a capitalistic system
What was the columbian exchange?
the flow of goods and culture between the americas and europe, primarily goods, but also crucially disease, like syphillis and smallpox
What were some major things which came to the americas on the columbian exchange?
-wheat
-horses
-most domesticated animals tbh bc america only had llamas, but horses were the really big one

What was the encomienda system?
-a system of labor under which the spanish exploited native american labor with a strict racial hierarchy
