Unit One Lesson 1.2 Key Words Flashcards
What is a bar graph?
A graph that displays the values associated with each level of the independent variable; used in cases where the horizontal axis represents a categorical or qualitative variable
What is a categorical variable?
A variable containing categorical data
What is a class?
A range into which numerical data can be grouped
What are class boundaries?
The maximum and minimum values within each class in a histogram or frequency table
What is a class interval?
The distance between two successive class minimums in a histogram or frequency table
What are class limits?
The upper and lower boundaries of a class
What is a class width?
The distance between the maximum and minimum values of a given class in a histogram or frequency table
What is cumulative frequency?
The sum of a series of frequencies in a data set, in which the frequency from one class is added to the sum of the frequencies of all the classes below it. The addition of all frequencies in a data set will equal the total number of observations in a data set
What is cumulative relative frequency graph?
A line graph that shows cumulative frequencies on the vertical axis and data values (divided into classes) on the horizontal axis
What is distribution?
The pattern of variation in a numeric or categorical variable. Basically how frequent or repetitive the numeric or categorical variable occurs
What is a dot plot?
Displays the number of observations with a particular value; each observation is shown as a dot
What is frequency?
The number of observations within a range of data
What is a frequency plot?
A plot (or graph) that shows frequencies
What is a frequency table?
A table that shows the number of observations in each of the classes, categories, or level of a variable
What is a gap?
A class with a frequency of zeros, or no observations
