Lesson 1.1 Flashcards
What is descriptive statistics?
Describe or summarize data that we already have
If you have the test scores from a classroom and transferred the known grades into a graph would that be descriptive or inferential statistics?
Descriptive
What is inferential statistics?
Infers things about data that we cannot directly measure.
If you took 5000 men and women from all across America and weighed them only to noticed that majority, not all, men weighed more than women. Knowing this you came to the hypothesis that there are bigger men in America than there are women. Is this descriptive or inferential statistics?
Inferential statistics
What are the 3 phases of statistical study?
Phase 1: Data Gathering
Phase 2: Data Organization and Analysis
Phase 3: Probability based inference
What statistical phases does descriptive statistics include?
Data gathering and Data organization and analysis
What statistical phases does inferential statistics include?
Data gathering, Data organizations de analysis, and probability based inference
What is data gathering aka phase 1?
Any process that gets you data
What is the most crucial statistical phase and why?
Data gathering the 1st phase because they are the hardest to correct if one is wrong they all are wrong
What is the data organization aka phase 2?
Makes the data into a graph, chart, or table, and calculates the numbers you get from the data
What is data analysis aka phase 2?
Looks for patterns in the graphs or statistics
What does exponentially mean?
Increasing at an increasing rate.
What is exploratory data analysis?
A study that proceeds without trying to answer any particular question.
What is probability based inference aka phase 3?
Using the mathematical rules about chance to determine how likely or unlikely something is
What is one bit of information?
Datum
