Unit II Transcendence & Immanence Flashcards
Immanence
God is present and active in nature and history.
Transcendence
God is separate, superior to, and independent of the created order.
Deism
Teaches that God is not immanent, but that He is only transcendent
Theological Liberalism
Teaches that God is not transcendent, but that He is only immanent.
Transcendence: Because God is separate, superior, and independent of the created order, then . . .
1: We should not be surprised (or try to explain away) the miraculous
2: Man is not the highest being in the universe
3: God can never be completely understood by the human mind
4: There will always be a difference between God and man
5: Reverence is appropriate in man’s relationship with God
Immanence: Because God is present and active in nature and history, then . . .
1: God is not limited to working miraculously, He can accomplish His will through natural causes
2: God can use persons (individually or collectively) who do not acknowledge Him to accomplish His will
3: We can have an appreciation for all thatGod has created, not simply because He made it, but because He continues to be active in it
