Unit II Flashcards
What are A Fibers?
Terminate as unmyelinated free nerve endings around odontoblasts or along odontoblast process
What are C Fibers
Primary Pulpal Fibers They terminate in the pulp proper and are unmyelinated
What are we trying to get numb?
Pulp and Surrounding hard and soft tissue
Which is harder to get numb, pulp or surrounding tissues?
Pulp
In the PDL do we have A delta or A beta fibers?
A Beta
What type of receptors are in the pulp and dentin?
Nociceptors
How does an electric pulp tester work?
Generates an electric signal that increases on a scale from 0-80. Toothpaste is the conductor and the patient holds the wand against the tooth until they feel the sensation in the pulp. When they let go the circuit is broken and auto resets to 0
What is the duration goal for endo?
60 Minutes
Who was Dr. Archer’s research partner and where was the article published?
Dr. Certosimo
Journal of Operative Dentistry, 1996
What did Dr. Archer’s research show?
That the electric pulp tester was a reliable predictor for the patient feeling pain during a restorative procedure
Are there more problems numbing the mandibular teeth or the maxillary teeth?
Mandibular
Are there more problems numbing the Anterior teeth or the posterior teeth?
Anterior
Which are harder to numb? Irrerverible pulpitis teeth or asymptomatic vital teeth?
Irreversible pulpitis
What is endo ice?
Refrigerant spray
What is the temp of endo ice?
- 26 degrees C
What is the chemical of endo ice?
1,1,1,2, TetraFluoro
Is it better to use a large cotton pellet or small with endo ice?
Large
To what is the cotton pellet applied to when using endo ice?
Buccal surface of tooth or full coverage restoration
Is endo ice more effective on anterior or posterior teeth?
Anterior
What is a big difference between the testing ability of the endo spray and the electric pulp tester?
The endo ice can be used on full coverage restorations, the EPT connot
What would an abnormal response to the endo ice be?
Prolonged or severe pain and/or different in characteristics of the adjacent teeth
What could result in a false positive?
Transference of the sensation to adjacent teeth or soft tissue due to a receded or constricted pulp
What does a pulp reading of +++ mean?
Severe pain that doesn’t go away when stimulus is removed
What is the symbol for a pulp test that had slight pain that is immediately reversed?
+
About how long does it take to get an anterior tooth numb after injection?
5 mins
How long does it take to numb a posterior tooth?
15 mins
What is the benefit of using a vasoconstrictor?
Increase duration of anesthesia
Which works better for the Lateral incisors? Articaine or Lidocaine?
Articaine
What is true about giving two carpules in the maxilla that isn’t true in the mandible?
Two carpules in the maxilla will MORE than double the duration.
What teeth does a V2 Block work for?
Maxillary Molars
Which molars does a PSA block NOT work on?
First Molars
For what teeth does an Infraorbital nerve block not work well for?
Maxillary Incisors
What will a palatal injection do for maxillary molars?
Increase the level of anesthesia
