Radiologic Diagnosis of Periodontal Disease Flashcards
In health teeth where is the alveolar crest located in realtion to the CEJ
1-1.5 mm apical
The the anterior teeth, how should the alveolar crest look?
Pointed, sharp, and very radiopaque
What should the alveolar crest look in the posterior teeth?
Flatter, smoother, and less radiopaque
What type of xrays will be required for Perio patients with significant alveolar bone loss?
Vertical BW
What are some indicators of a healthy periodontium?
Uniform trabecular pattern
Lamina dura observed lining the alveolar sockets
Uniform PDL spaces
Alveolar Crest 1.5-2 mm apical to cej
What some signs of Perio Disease in xrays?
Bone crest more than 2 mm apical of CEJ Increased crown to root ratio Increased width of PDL Loss of bone in furcations Calculus may be visible on teeth Roughness of the interdental septal bone crest indicates the presence of active disease
What is ADA Case Type I
Gingivitis, no radiographic change
What is ADA Case Type II
Early Perio D, mild bone loss up to 30%.
Xrays show mild crestal bone loss
What is ADA Case Type III
Moderate PD
Bone Loss 30-50%, may be horizontal or vertical
Includes Furcation
Xrays show moderate bone loss that may include furcation area
What is ADA Case Type IV
Advanced PD
50% + Bone Loss
What are some typical indicators of Mild Bone Loss
Triangulation of PDL
Widening of PDL
Radiopaque alveolar crest loses density
What are some indicators of Moderate bone loss?
Can appear as horizontal or vertical loss
RL’s begin to be viewable in furcation areas
Why might furcation involvement be difficult to visualize in the maxilla?
Because of the superimposing of the palatal root over the furcation area.
Which cortex is the one closest to the film?
The clearer, sharper one…..the lingual
What are some local risk factors that predispose a patient to PD?
Calculus
Overhangs
Open interproximal contacts
Defective crown margins
