Unit II Flashcards
Negative control
When a regulatory protein called a repressor binds to DNA and shuts down transcription.
Differential gene expression
When cells with the genome express different sets of genes due to internal signaling.
Acetylation
The addition of acetyl groups to a condensed chromatin in order to de-condense it.
Chromatin-remodeling complexes
Macromolecular machines made of proteins which harness the energy in ATP to reshape chromatin.
Epigenetic inheritance
Any mechanism of inheritance not caused by DNA.
DNA methylization
DNA methyltransferases add methyl groups to cytosine residues in DNA, which are then recognized by proteins which trigger chromatin condensation.
Amphipathic
Substances that contain both hydrophilic and hydrophilic regions.
