unit D - section 1.0 Flashcards
what is static electricity?
a stationary electric charge, which is the process of you becoming part of a short circuit and becoming neutralized
What is a proton?
positively charged particle of an atom
What is an electron?
negatively charged which orbits the nucleus of an atom
What is a charge separation?
like charges are in separate areas of a neutral object.
What is the electrical law?
charges of an atom either form attractive or repelled forces,
like charges will repel
unlike charges will attract
what is electrical discharge?
transfer of electrical charge going from one object to another.
what is electrical current?
particles moving in a steady and continuous flow, which can power electrical devices.
can only flow if there is an energy source like a plug/fuse
and has to have a complete path or circuit
what is circuit?
a completed path that allows charged particles to go through.
What is an ampere?
the unit shown of electrical current?
What is a conductor?
a material in which electric charge can easily move through
what is electrical energy?
energy of charged particles that are transferred when electrons travel
what is voltage?
it shows how much electrical energy a charged particle carries.
what is potential difference?
change in the potential energy at a reference point.
What is volt?
the unit of voltage.
what is load?
turns one form of energy into another.
what is a voltmeter?
instrument which measures potential difference in volts.
what is a short circuit?
accidental path made for extra current flow to flow through.
what are insulators?
strongly resists the flow of electricity
what are fuses?
breaks an electrical circuit when excess current flows through.
what is a circuit breaker?
wire that heats up which causes the switch to turn off when excess current flows through
what is an electro-chemical cell
package of chemicals to produce small amounts of electricity it produces electricity from chemical reaction.
what is a dry cell?
a cell in which the electrolytes are in a form of a paste, which is in a sealed case.
what are the 2 parts of a cell?
the electrolytes react with with 2 metals called electrodes,
what is an electrolyte?
paste that conducts electricity due to the ions
what is an electrode?
conductor which electric current enters or leaves
what is a primary cell?
cell that produces electricity which a chemical reaction cannot be reversed
what is a rechargeable cell?
cell that produces electricity in which chemical reaction can be reversed
what is electrochemistry?
study of chemical reactions involving electricity
what is electrolysis?
decomposition of a substance by an electric current
