unit C Flashcards
Chemicals in the environment - pg 183
different chemicals make organisms better
and or worse.
What is the nitrogen cycle - pg 184
- Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into another substance *
some elements such as oxygen and carbon always move through ecosystems and form compounds that are used and reused by living things.Changing the state they are in every time in this cycle.
What is the PH scale - pg 191
Acidity is measured by PH,most solutions have a PH fro 0 - 14. Solutions with PH of 0 are very acidic.A solution with PH of 14 is very basic or alkaline.A PH of seven means that a solution is neutral neither acidic or basic.
Neutralization - pg 193
when taking an antacid when your stomach is upset the antacid gives off a chemical/solution that reacts with the solution/chemical in your stomach to neutralize it
macro-nutrients vs micro-nutrients - pg 197
nutrients are needed in plants/living things to help them survive. the plant obtains nutrients from the air along with from the soil. These elements are needed is large amounts it is called
–> Macro - nutrients
Micro - nutrients - small amount
What is organic molecules - pg 199
most chemicals in humans and plants are organic compounds , 4 IMPORTANT classes o organic compounds are carbohydrates , liquids , proteins , and nucleic acids
osmosis - pg 205
movement of water through the roots of plants , osmosis is when water moves through the walls of the roots in the plant from places of high molecules of water to low. The plant then uses the water to gain growth an obtain maintenance.
active transport - pg 205
plants need high concentration of nutrients and they get this from active transport. to maintain the high concentration the plant must move the molecules into the roots.
substrates - pg 209
the sea creature attaches itself to a rock to obtain nutrients from the substrates. to obtain nutrients like the old on a piece of bread.
biological indicators - pg 214
helps determine water quality. the indicator=tors might include fish, plants, worms, algae and tiny animals, etc
chemical indicators
indicates how much nitrogen,oxygen,and phosphorus.
measuring chemicals in the environment - pg 216
usually measured in parts per million (PPM)
Phosphorus and nitrogen - pg 219
most organisms are sensitive to changes in the environment they live in the amount of dissolved oxygen. Dissolved oxygen can be affected by in phosphorus and nitrogen.
Acidity spring acid - shock - pg 220
a sudden increase level of acidity it’s cause by snow melting in the spring that goes into lake, rivers, etc this can effect freshwater species
Measuring toxicity - LD50 - pg 221
to compare toxins you use the LD50. LD means lethal dose, 50 means 50%.
LD50 is the amount of substances that cause 50% to die if they are given a specific dose.
