Unit D - Mechanical Systems Flashcards
What does interconnected mean?
parts joined togather to make a machine or part of a machine
What are components?
the parts of a machine
What is a force?
the power or strength of the energy that a machine uses or produces
What is the magnitude of force?
the amount of force used or produced by machine
What is direction of force?
the way in which energy goes or moves into or out of a machine
What is transmit energy?
when a machine sends, passes on or spreads energy from one place to another
What is modify energy?
when a machine changes the amount or type of energy
What is a simple machine?
any tool that is made up of only one basic machine
What is a lever?
a flat bar or plank that can mover over a fixed point. Levers usually magnify the mount of effort a person needs to do things. Each lever includes a fulcrum, load and effort (FLE)
What is an example of a lever?
hammer, seesaw, wheelbarrow
What is a pulley?
a machine made up of wire, rope or cable that moves along a groove in a wheel. Pulleys are used to lift things. The heavier the load , the more pulleys are put together to do the job.
What is an example of a pulley?
elevators, crane, window blind
What is wheel and axle?
a machine that is made up of two different sized wheels that turn together. The bigger wheel takes a longer time to turn but it pushes the smaller wheel around much faster. Less force needs to be used to turn whatever is attached to the smaller wheel.
What is an example of a wheel and axle?
doorknob, pizza cutter, skateboard
What is a screw?
a cylinder that has a long groove cut in a spiral runing around and aound it.
