UNIT D: Fresh and Saltwater Systems Flashcards
What determines if water is drinkable?
pH level, turbidity test, nirate, etc.
Salt vs. Fresh vs. Drinking water
Saltwater is denser than fresh and drinking water, 3% of the water on earth is fresh water, and 1.2% of that is drinking water, as the rest is locked up in icecaps and glaciers.
Whats erosion?
Proceds of Earthen materials are worn away and transported by nature
What’s depositon?
The laying down of sediment carried by wind, flowing water, sea, or ice
How does erosion and deposition result from waves/water flow?
The force from the waves knocks fragments of the rocks; forces water into cracks.
Waves carry sediments, depositing them onto shore.
Where does the sediment in the water end up?
any kind of body of water
How are waves/tides generated? How do they impact shore lines?
Waves - Wind
Tides - Gravitation pull from moon
Waves and tides change the shape of the shoreline through erosion and deposition
how does speed influence erosion and deposition?
As the flow velocity increases, only larger and larger particles will be deposited
Define ocean basins
Anywhere on Earth that is covered by seawater
How is the ocean floor formed?
Techtonic plate movement due to changes in magma currents at the Earths core
Name the features of the ocean floor
Continental shelf
Continental slope
Mid ocean ridge
Abyssal plain
Ocean trench
What are ocean currents? How do they affect climate?
Streams of water that move within larger body. They circulate heat across the Earth
What evidence of glaciers are there?
Glaciers are always moving but leave behind horns, U-shaped valleys, and cirques
What adaptations are needed for different bodies of water?
Salinity
Temperature
Pressure
Lack of Light
Water Movement
How does water quality and oxygen relate to the diversity within a body of water?
More dissolved oxygen = more oxygen available for organisms in the water
