Unit: Bacteria Kingdom Part 1: Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
Cell wall
Thick outer part of the cell
Cell membrane
Controls everything that goes in and out of the cell. Keeps everything inside the cell
Cytoplasm
Protects DNA. Fills up the cell
DNA
Makes you. Controls the cell. Like a brain
Ribosomes
Makes proteins
Pili
Helps bacteria stick to surfaces
Motile
Can move
Flagella
Long, whip like structures that help the bacterium move
Spherical bacteria
Cocci
Rod shaped
Bacilli
Spiral shaped
Spirilla
Binary fission
Reproduction. Makes an identical bacteria.
- Cell grows
- DNA is copied and attached to the cell membrane
- DNA and its copy separate as the cell grows larger
- The cell splits into 2. Each new cell has its own DNA
Extremophiles
Live in extreme environments. They can live in boiling hot water (ex. Yellowstone geysers) and/or frozen temperatures (ex. 430 m of ice in Antarctica).
How are archaea and bacteria are the same?
They are both prokaryotic cells and they both have no nucleus
How are archaea and bacteria different
Some archaea don’t have a cell membrane.
They have different materials in the cell wall
