Unit A3: cardiovascular and respiratory system. Flashcards
What is the primary function of the circulatory system in the body?
To transport materials around the body.
Give examples of what the human circulatory system transports around the body?
oxygen, carbon dioxide, glucose, white blood cells, antibodies, hormones, waste chemicals and heat.
what does double circulation mean?
for every 1 loop of the body the blood passes the heart twice.
which side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood?
The left hand side deals with oxygenated blood and the right hand side deals with deoxygenated blood.
what is the circuit called that links the heart to the lungs?
pulmonary circuit.
what is the circuit called that links the heart to the body tissues?
systemic circuit.
do arteries move blood away from the heart or towards the heart?
away from the heart.
do veins move blood away from the heart or towards it?
towards the heart.
BIG QUESTION:
explain the pulmonary circulation fully and then explain the systemic circulation.
The pulmonary circulation moves deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle, through the pulmonary artery, to capillary networks in the lungs where it is oxygenated and then goes through the pulmonary vein to the left atrium.
The systemic circulation circulates blood from the left ventricle through the aorta and arteries to the tissues of the body systems, where in the capillaries oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged, through the venules and the veins, back to the superior and inferior vena cava and into the right atrium.
explain the transport of blood through the heart starting from the lungs?
blood moves from the pulmonary vein-left atrium-left ventricle-semi lunar valves-Aorta-body tissues-right atrium-right ventricle-semi lunar valves-pulmonery artery-backto lungs.
what are the three types of blood vessels you need to know about?
arteries, veins and capillaries.
what are the adaptations of arteries?
Thick muscular walls, small lumen. High blood pressure and has a pulse.
what are the adaptations of capillaries?
links arterioles and venules, low pressure , no pulse and no valves.
what are the adaptations of veins?
thin muscular walls, large lumen, low blood pressure and have valves to prevent backflow of blood.
what are the blood vessels in order of size?
Heart-arteries-arterioles-capillaries-venules-veins.
