Unit A Section 1 Flashcards
Ecosystem*
Any place or location where living and nonliving things interact.
Biotic Factors*
The living parts of an ecosystem.
Abiotic Factors*
The nonliving parts of the ecosystem
Speices
a group of animals, plants or other living things that share common characteristics and are able to reproduce.
Population*
a group of organisms of the same species that live in a particular area.
Community*
all the populations of different species that live and interact in the same place form a community.
The Needs of Living Things
WaterFood/Nutrients (for movement, health, growth, repair), Energy, Oxygen, Suitable living conditions (shelter, clothing, heat)
Symbiotic Relationships*
A relationship between different species which benefits either or both species.
Commensalism*
One species receives the benefit the other is uneffected.
Mutualism*
Both species benefit.
Parasitism*
One species benefits while one is harmed.
Adaptation*
Some individuals of a species survive quite well in an ecosystem while others do not. Over several generations the offspring of a species become suited to the area in which they live. They change or adapt to meet all their needs.
Structural Adaptaion*
Physical characteristic (skin, scales, feet, wings, mouth parts
Behavioral Adaptation*
Learned characteristic
How have humans impacted the environment?
Pollution
Farming
Mining
Cities
Water Usage
Wildlife
Forestry
Fisheries
Sustainability
means to use our natural resources slowly so they can be renewed faster than we use them.
Ecological Footprint
the impact you have on Earth.
4 rs
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover
Natural Resources
fish, minerals, oils, water, forests
Reduce
To buy less and less
Produce less garbage
Turn off lights, take shorter showers, low-flow toilets
Reuse
Use products that you can use again and again
Hand-me-down clothing, refillable containers, crafts
Recycle
To turn materials into new products
Take paper, cans, bottles to the recycling depot
Energy is used to change the physical properties of the material
Recover
Changing waste material into usable energy
Some plastics that can’t be recycle can be converted into energy (like electricity)
Predator*
Kill and eat animals
Prey*
Get eaten by predators
