Unit A: Brain Flashcards
Cerebrum
Biggest part of brain, contains four lobes and two hemispheres
What does each hemisphere control?
Left hemisphere controls right side movement, mathematical thinking and language.
Right hemisphere controls left side and artistic thinking/spacial awareness
Lobe on front?
Frontal lobe
Primary sensory cortext is motor function.
Associated Areas are personality and intellect.
Lobe on bottom?
Temporal lobe.
Primary sensory cortext hearing.
Associated Areas are memory and sense interpretation.
Lobe on top?
Parietal lobe.
Sensory areas are touch and temp awareness.
Associated areas are emotions and speech interpretation.
Lobe at back?
Occipital lobe.
Sensory areas are vision.
Associated areas are vision interpretation.
Area beside frontal lobe?
Primary motor cortex
Area beside parietal lobe?
Primary somatosensory cortex
Cerebral cortex
Surface of cerebrum. Composed of grey matter (white matter on inside).
Corpus Callosum
Nerves that connect right and left hemispheres
Thalamus
Relay station for sensory info that goes to cerebrum
Hypothalamus
Regulates homeostasis, many hormone functions, connected to pituitary gland.
Olfactory lobe
Connected to bottom of temporal lobe, interprets info on smells.
Cerebellum
Controls balance and muscle tone. In hindbrain
Medulla oblongata
Joints the spinal cord to cerebellum
