Unit A Flashcards
What is the most important thing a teacher should establish in the first week of school and what does it help?
Consistency. Consistency will help students to know exactly what they’re getting and what will be happening. Students do not want surprises or disorganization.
Know the three characteristics of an effective teacher
- Has positive expectations for student success.
- Is an extremely good classroom manager.
- Knows how to design lessons for student mastery.
Describe the three things the effective teacher does with research.
The effective teacher understands the research process, uses proven, research-based teaching practices, and uses research data to improve teaching and learning. What this means is that the teacher goes beyond just reading and lecturing to differentiate the classroom. This teacher uses different methods and tools in order to better reach each of her students. The methods that this effective teacher uses are based in research and have been proven successful.
Describe the teacher’s role as an employee of the school district.
- The schools are owned and operated by the citizens of your local community.
- Schools are the foundation for transmitting the values and traditions that ensure our life in a free society.
- The school are built for the students.
Be able to list and describe the four stages of teaching.
- The fantasy stage-they feel the need to be friends with their students and spend more time entertaining rather than teaching.
- Survival stage-look for plenty of busywork for the students to do because they are barely getting by.
- The mastery stage-this teacher uses effective practices and teach for mastery with high expectations for their students.
- Impact-this teacher makes a difference in the lives of their students. They go beyond what is required as a teacher and directly impact the students.
Be able to explain why it is dangerous to teach the way we were taught according to Wong.
Research has shown that the way that we were taught is not the most effective means for teaching. Teaching needs to go beyond pencil and paper, reading the chapter, and listening to an hour long lecture. Effective teachers do what the research tells us is most effective.
Know that “people who do things right are efficient. People do things right over and over again, consistently, are effective.”
It is important for teachers to have a pattern of excellence, which means that they do the right thing over and over again; making them effective in the classroom. In order to teach one good lesson plan you need efficiency, but to truly be effective, means to do the right thing consistently.
According to Wong, control means what three things?
That you know:
- What you were doing
- Your classroom procedures
- Your professional responsibilities
Know what Wong says about good and bad habits
Good habits are easy to develop and bad habits are difficult to break.
Know the two things an effective teacher is and what kind of practice teaching is not.
- Can explain the district’s, school’s, and department or grade level’s curriculum.
- Realizes that teaching is not a private practice.
- Is flexible and adaptable.
- Listens, listens, listens.
Be able to describe the model of teaching that is commonly practiced but has a no research to support it.
Read a textbook, assign chapter, independent worksheet, do activity, and take a test.
What is involved in classroom management?
4 Elements
- Expectations
- Instruction
- Motivation
- Discipline
Be able to list and describe the five keys to good classroom.
- Make classroom arrangements consistent with one’s personal goals and activities.
- Keep high traffic areas free from congestion.
- Be sure that the students can be easily seen by the teacher.
- Keep frequently used teaching materials and students supplies readily accessible.
- Be certain students can easily see whole-class presentations and displays.
Know the following equation concerning an effective classroom: well-ordered classroom + positive academic expectations = effective classroom.
A classroom has to follow the rules of the classroom arrangement and is organized in order to ensure a greater chance of learning. The teacher needs to alert the students to what his or her expectations are for them in order to reach their highest achievement. Both of these together help create an environment that will produce more effective teaching and more effective students.
