Unit 9: Pharmacology Flashcards
Define between the chemical, and generic, trade name
Chemical name:
Acetyl Salicylic Acid ( ASA)
P- isobutylhydratropic Acid
N- Acetyl-P-AcetamidoPhenol (APA)
Generic name:
Aspirin ( ASA)
Ibuprofen
Acetaminophen ( APAP)
Trade name:
Bufferin, Anacin, Bayer
Motrin, Advil
Tylenol
ASA
Asprin
APAP
Acetaminophen/ Tylenol
PCN
Penicillin
IBU
Ibuprofen
What are common medication classifications
Chemicals structure
Mechanism of action
Receptor
Effect
Legal
And ETC.
Examples of drug classes that include chemical structures
B-lactam antibiotic
Benzodiazepines
Cardiac glycoside
Thiazide diuretic
What is an antagonist
Blocks a receptor, enzyme, or chemical to stop something from happening
Ex: Antihistamines block H1 & H2 receptors
Beta blockers prevent BP problems
What is an agonist
Binds to and stimulates a receptor
EX: codeine, morphine, hydrocodone
What is the purpose of an Analgesic
To stop pain
What is the purpose of an anticoagulant
To stop clotting
What is the purpose of an antidepressant
To subside depression
What is the purpose of an antiviral
To stop a virus
What is pharmacokinetics
The way drugs move through the body
How it’s distributed
The metabolism ( how it’s broken down)
Excretion ( how it’s eliminated)
What is pharmacodynamics
What the drug does to the body, the biological and physiological effect
Examples:
Block
Bind
Stimulates
Increases
What is pharmacogenetics
The study of how genes affect a persons response to drugs
Not everyone will respond to drugs the same way
What are the 6 Rights of Drug safety
- The right patient (WHO)
- The right medication (WHAT)
- The right dose (WHAT)
- The right time (WHEN)
- The right route ( WHERE)
- The right documentation (WRITE)
Discuss basic safety practices of medication administration
Always check the drugs name and expiration date
Don’t lick your fingers to help pick up pills
Confirm patient ID prior to giving any medications/ contrasts
Document only after giving Rx
Only administer meds you removed from the original packet
