Unit 9: Env Sustainability at the Global Level Flashcards

1
Q

Analyze the link between sustainability and environmental decision-making with respect to efficacy and policy development.

A

The sustainability focus of governments is on the reduction of emissions, innovation, and a competitive economy. Their environmental decision-making is skewed by these priorities wherein decisions are underutilizing scientific data and consultation frameworks and are pushing political agendas instead of seeking the best ways forward. The target dates keep moving ahead due to these ineffective policy development techniques. Governmental agendas have a larger focus on economic competitiveness than on sustainability which harms the economy in the long-term as natural resources are depleted and climate change does not wait for any economy.

Q

Critique the notion of co-productive policy design and its relationship to behavioral leadership.

A

Co-productive policy design actively involves citizens and stakeholders in the decision-making process from the beginning through to the monitoring and evaluation stage. This ensures transparency and follow through as stakeholders can see the impact of their contributions. This also allows for the inclusion of a broader considerations and diverse perspectives which makes for more effective and meaningful policy development. Co-productive policy design is possible when leaders display values-based behaviours of transparency, accountability, collaboration, and consultation. This type of transformational leadership through co-productive policy design is made possible when leaders are open to diverse perspectives and look outward for innovation.

Q

Analyze the importance of the Paris climate conference (COP21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. You’re response should link to the challenging outcomes of ending poverty, fighting inequality and injustice, and addressing climate change.

A

COP21 was the first time 105 countries came to an agreement that something needs to be done to reduce the impact humans are having on the climate. It includes recognition of the rights of Indigenous peoples, the role of governments, corporations, and citizens, and the need for attention to other global issues in the fight against climate change. The agreement was monumental in its efforts to bring together so many nations. It seems it has been treated as a checkbox that has been checked however the work that is described within is not yet done. Furthermore, criticism of the agreement illuminates that it does not describe specifically what is to be done, by whom, and to what degree. It is up to individual countries to decide their commitment and it is not based on impact. The agreement itself, although legally binding once in place, is voluntary and seemingly for show.

… No link to the challenging outcomes listed in the question…

Q

Critique the importance of the development of an Earth Systems Governance approach.

A

what is it? Earth Systems Governance is the understanding and recognition that climate change does not recognize political boundaries and that it takes every governance system to collaborate to fight climate change and reduce negative human impact on the environment. It is also the recognition of societal behaviours which dictate good and appropriate social expectations for environmental practices. Earth systems governance considers global institutions, local and national policy development, technological advancement, and individual citizen behaviours to steer human activity toward sustainability.
benefits? Benefits of this approach are that developed countries can work to support environmentally friendly infrastructure in developing countries. Countries can be accountable and transparent about their individual impacts based on CO2 emmissions, unsustainable practices, etc. Each country can contribute innovative ideas and technological advancements to support greening efforts.
challenges? Climate change doesn’t recognize political boundaries and the efforts of one country or area could be mitigated by the lack of efforts or detrimental practices of a neighbouring country/area. Earth systems governance requires all governments and MNEs to be on board which has been attempted through such meetings as the UN annual climate conference.

Q

Earth System Governance

A
  1. About human impact of planetary systems, Societal steering of human activities with regard to long term sustainability of geobiophysical systems. Understanding earth is an integrated, interdependent system transformed by the interplay of human and non human agency.
It’s not just about global institutions. Also, technological change and incremental local and national policy.
Transformations in social behavior such as the perspective of good and socially appropriate lifestyles are crucial as well.

Q

COP21

A

The conference of the parties - Annual climate conference coordinates international efforts to address climate change and reviews the un framework convention on climate changes progress and implementation.
COP21 is where the historic Paris agreement was adopted December 12, 2015.
195 countries reached an agreement which recognises the role of all levels of government, the rights of indigenous peoples, lower carbon, decent work, education, and public participation among others in the fight against climate change.
Criticisms
-It is voluntary agreement which says something needs to be done but not by whom and to what degree
-takes an economic stance, appeals to the countries economic goals and allows for shifting of responsibility and defers action without actually introducing new solutions to the program.
-no specifics or consideration to the actual emissions of each country.
(Morgan, 2016).

Tutor:
What is COP 21? It is also referred to as the Paris COP21 Climate Change Agreement which is a legally binding international treaty. It is a treaty developed in response to a warming climate also referred to as climate change.
Why is it significant? Why does it matter? Since climate change is a pressing concern, COP21 matters because it shows international cooperation to lowing the global temperature.
What are the concerns for how we lead and govern? Despite this international cooperation, large corporations have not changed their practices substantively. Moreover, there are still influential climate change deniers. This raises concern whether COP21 was truly successful and whether there is meaningful leadership, globally, to prevent further climate change

Q

Co-productivity policy design

A
  1. A developmental approach where citizens and other stakeholders are actively involved throughout the process of the co-creation of public service policy rather than merely surveyed or otherwise “consulted” without knowledge of their direct impact
  2. Collaboration and meaningful consultation ensure the inclusion of more diverse and representative perspectives which creates more relevant policies and contributes to the impact of those policies

Q

Climate change

A
  1. Otherwise known as global warming is a natural process by which the earths average temperature increases. However, this term has come to refer to the accelerated warming of the planet due to human activity. The fight against climate change therefore includes steps to mitigate this unnatural acceleration by humans including the move to reusable energy sources and the decrease of both consumption and pollution.
  2. this is a pressing concern for every nation in the world as it affects availability of resources and the migration of people around the world. It also has disproportional negative affects for developing countries, people living in poverty, and Indigenous Peoples.
  3. The issues around climate change are complex and there is a great inability for governments around the world to come to an agreement on how to solve these issues. Additionally, despite the science and social and economic evidence of the climate change, there are still deniers of global warming.
