Chief Justice Roger Taney ruled
African Americans were not citizens and could not sue; slaves were property. The government had no right to take property away from citizens. Due to this ruling, the Missouri Compromise was ruled unconstitutional and stated that Congress had no right to ban slavery in the U.S.
