Def: One of the most prominent African American civil rights leaders in the United States, who led the civil rights movement.
LO9: His movements used civil disobedience like a year-long boycott of public buses in Montgomery, and mass marches like the March on Washington to achieve its goal of ending segrigation.
Nelson Mandela 8.7
Def: A South African leader of the black resistance to apartheid.
LO9: Nelson Mandela responded to apartheid through nonviolent protests. He was imprisoned and lated became the country’s first black President to focus on racial reconciliation.
New Modes Of Communication 9.1
Def: Televisions, cellphones, social networking etc. was developed in the early 1900s.
LO1: Technology connects people around the world and things like social media makes the world seem smaller.
Green Revolution 9.1
Def: This revolution was a direct response to hunger and created resistance to diseases and drought by scientists varients of wheat, rice, and grains.
LO1: New technologies like genetic engineering and crossing breeding, and things such as pesticides and fertilizers, increased food production to help people not starve during times of population growth.
Medical Innovations 9.1
Def: This led to new treatments like antibiotics, birth control, and vaccines.
LO9: These advancements in medicine increased survival, lowered birth rates, and preventeed diseases.
Covid-19 Pandemic 9.2
Def: A pandemic that became prominent in early 2020 and led to over 6.15 million deaths.
LO2: There was an improvement in air quality and water pollution because people were not outside as much.
Diseases of Poverty 9.2
Def: This include malaria tuberculosis, polio, etc.
LO2: These diseases are expected in less developed countries because of poor working conditions, contaminated water, and a lack of access to healthcare.
Diseases of Longevity 9.2
Def: This included heart disease and Alzheimer’s.
LO2: People began living longer because of technological developments and medical innovations making it more prevelent for these diseases for older poeple.
Causes of Environmental Change 9.3
Def: Commercial activities like industrialization and urbanization contributed to this.
LO3: These causes led to deforestation, declined air quality, global warming, etc.
Economic Liberalization 9.4
Def: This is one having a desire for free markeets to ‘open up’ a countrys economy.
LO4: Free markets remove themselves from government control and are based on supply and demand
Deng Xiaoping 9.4
Def: A leader of the Communist party who implemented economic liberalization in China and promised economic equality.
LO4: He reopened the Shanghai stock market and encouraged foreign companies to set up factories in Special Economic Zones
Knowledge Economy 9.4
Def: An economic system that created, distributed, and used knowledge and information in jobs like teaching and engineering.
LO4: This was also used in Japan with the Asian Tigers manufacturing.
World Trade Organization 9.4, 9.7
Def: This organization took over GATT and had power over more than 90% of all international trade.
LO4: Continuities: Controversial because of the WTO’s tendency to favor trade over moral issues. Changes: Took over GATT. A member nation that refused to buy clothing made by sweatshop labor could suffer trade sanctions from The World Trade Organization sometimes favored trade over morals issues causing some tension withing the organization.
Multinational Corporations 9.4
Def: A corporation that makes a product in one country but sells the goods or services in other countries.
LO4: These companies often exploit the resources and labor of a region to profit.
ASEAN 9.4
Def: (Association of South-East Asian Nations) Attracted foreign investments as an economic power to compete against China.
LO4: ASEAN aided stability for South-East Asia by following others lead creating economic stability.
