Russian Revolution

Def: Vladimir Lenin imposed communist control after the Paris Peace Conference. This led to a civil war between the red and white armies inside of Russia.
LO1: After the civil war Lenin created a New Economic Policy in order to stabilize the economy. He also created the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Representatives).

Def: Idea that war involved the governments, economies and populations of participating nations and everyone helped win a war.
LO3: The total war strategy was useful during this time because it allowed civilians to help with the war effort. Factories produced cars, tanks and airplanes, people were not buying as much food so they can send more to the troops, donation drives where people donate bikes to use the rubber for tank wheels

Great Depression

A

Def: a worldwide economic collapse resulting in both political and economic changes.
LO4: The United States responded to the Depression by electing a new president, Franklin Roosevelt who instituted New Deal which brought about jobs as well as regulated banking. Germany turned towards Fascism in the form of the Nazi party and their leader, Hitler created a totalitarian state in which he blames Jews for Germany’s loss in WWI.
RU was not largely affected by the Depression. They got a new leader though and he (Stalin) collectivized farmland and industrialized.

New Deal

Def: Instituted by Franklin Roosevelt during the Depression in order to bring new jobs and regulate banking.
LO4: Roosevelt’s plan did not end the Depression in the United States, however it alleviated economic strain. This also strengthened people’s faith in the government so Communist/Socialist parties did not gain as much popularity as seen in other nations during this time.

Fascist Corporatist Economy

Def: Italy’s leader, Benito Mussolini founded Fascism. The state controls every aspect of citizen’s lives and promotes extreme nationalism. Citizen’s are not individuals and they exist for the state.
LO4: The Global Great Depression made way for authoritarian governments as seen with Mussolini and Hitler

LO5: Mandates were to resolve the question of jurisdiction over the colonial territories and were created in the Treaty of Versalles

Causes of WWII

Def: Causes of WWII were the Treaty of Versailles and its treatment of Germany, and its facist rule to come about, and facism inside of Europe.
The Global Great Depression following WWI resulted in authorization governments and political unrest because of things like Hitler’s rise to power in Germany. He signed Non-Aggression Pacts with other leaders such as Stalin. When Hitler invaded Poland, he violated a Non-Aggression Pact leading to BR and FR declaring war on Germany.
LO6: The Allied Powers which included: BR, US, and the SU fought against the Axis Powers which included GY, JP, and Italy. The consequences of WWII were the effects of the Holocaust, peace settlement, the Marshall Plan which helped to avoid another depression, and the decline of colonialism. Women were now able to go to college and work.

New military tech WWII

Def: radar helped BR survive Hitler’s attacks and the atomic bombs developed by Einstein led to Japan’s surrender.
LO7: Trench warfare was slow so the solutions were developed to avoid the trenches. The atomic bombs “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki resulting in destruction making governments switch to faster paced tactics like bombs.

Holocaust

Def: The mass genocide (targeted group) of Jewish people under Hitler’s reign. It was Hitlers final solution and goal to purify the arianian race, killing 6 million jews, and 6 million that were undesirable to the Nazis (gypsies, gays, old, handicap, in political group, etc)
U7LO8: The Holocaust was a result of the German people’s need to find a scapegoat for their loss in WWI. Germans had to pay billions for the war due to the Treaty of Versailles final decision to place the blame on Germany.

Ukrainian genocide

Def: Holodomor or Ukrainian War, soviets started collectivizing land and putting it under state control. Kulaks were wealthy/middle class landowners who were given a little bit of capitalism. Stallin said if they did not give up the land they would be put in prison. They did not want to collectivize land so Stallin took all the food and shipped it to russia creating an artificial famine killing 3.9 million
U7LO8: The Ukrainian Genocide was caused by Vladimir Lenin's desire to industrialize the Soviet Union. He imposed the New Economic Policy and enforced communism. His 5 Year Plans achieved the goal to industrialize and bring jobs, however working conditions were terrible and famine resulted.
