Unit 8 Topic 5: Genetic Mutations Flashcards
A permanent mistake or change made to the original DNA sequence or mRNA transcript
Mutation
If a mutation occurs in a gene sequence, it can do what?
Change the protein that is made
What disorders are caused by a mutation in a singular gene.
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Sickle cell Anemia
- Tay-Sachs Disease
- Color blindness
Point Mutation (pm)
One nitrogenous base is changed
What are the different types of mutations?
Point mutation, Silent, Missense, Nonsense, Frameshift (insertion or deletion)
Silent Mutation
PM, no change in outcome because it codes for the same amino acid
Missense
PM, codes for a different amino acid
Nonsense
PM, creates a stop codon and the rest of code is not read.
Frameshift (insertion)
Base added to the sequence, shifts reading frame over.
Frameshift Deletion
Base removed from the sequence, shifts reading frame over.
