ZERO CONDITIONAL
if + present simple, subject + present simple
Usage: General Truth
If you heat butter, it melts!
FIRST CONDITIONAL
If + present simple, subject + will + infinitive
Usage: Possible future action and result
If I study, I will pass the exam!
As long as, providing/provided that, on conditiion
First conditional
The need for one action to happen before another action can happen
SECOND CONDITIONAL
If + past simple, subject + would/might/could + infinitive.
Usage: Hypothetical action or unlikely situation and likely result
If I won the lottery, I would buy a car.
THIRD CONDITIONAL
If + Subject + past perfect, subject + would have + past participle
Usage: Hypothetical action or situation in the past and its likely result.
If Anna had slept better, she would not have a headache.
Supposing (that) , imagine (if/that), what if
to ask the listener to imagine a past or present situation.
Supposing we had put our heads together, we would have come up with something brilliant.
On the verge of/on the point of +-ing
something that will happen VERY SOON.
Example:
The company was on the verge of going bankrupt.
Be to + infinitive
something that will definitely happen or an official arrangement.
Example:
We are to eat dinner at 7 o’clock
Be set to/be due to + infinitive
something that is expected to happen
Example:
The film is due to be released on 4 October.
FUTURE CONTINUOUS
Subject + will be + -ing
- for an action in progress at a specific future time.
- for something that will happen as a matter of course. (va a pasar como cosa normal)
“I´ll be getting the bus to school again tomorrow, so I´ll download a film to watch”
FUTURE PERFECT
subject + will have + past participle
for an action that will be complete by a future time.
