Long transition vs Short transition
Long transition: 75-150 years (Europe) with a gradual population increase and gradual decline in mortality rate
Short Transition: 40-80 years (Africa, Asia, Latin America) with a sudden population increase due to an abrupt decline in mortality rate
Why does the South have an abrupt decline in mortality rate?
It is due to socio-sanitary technology; The sanitation that was developed in the North is given to the South
Due to the non-decreasing birth rate in southern countries, what effect does that have on children?
They are investment i.e. children go to work to help the family economy
What strategy did East Asian countries implement following WW2? What was the consequence?
It was to block imports and increase exports until the wage rose for workers. The consequence of this strategy was the ability to purchase new technology and materials to sustain economic growth.

Unequal exchange (South depend more on North)
Uncontrolled increase in supply (North subsidizes South)
Demand ceiling for raw materials
Artificial substitutes (e.g. sweeteners)

Political corruption, civil wars, dictatorial regimes
