Unit 7B: Populations And Evolution Flashcards
1
Q
What is a population
A
All of the members of one species in a habitat at the same time that can potentially interbreed.
2
Q
What is population genetics
A
- the study of the genetic composition of populations rather than individuals
- helps scientists look at the genetic differences / variation and similarities both within and between populations.
3
Q
What is a polymorphic gene
A
Genes that may have multiple different forms (alleles) within a population.
4
Q
What is a Mendelian population
A
- may be considered to be a group of closely related, sexually reproducing organisms residing within defined geographical boundaries within which each member has an equal chance of mating with any other member of the population
5
Q
What is a gene pool
A
The total number of alleles of a particular gene that are present within a population at a particular time.
