Define physical abuse
Abuse that causes physical harm or illness

Define Sexual abuse
Undesired sexual behaviour by one person upon another - can be in person or online
Name examples of sexual abuse
Penetration - rape or oral sex
Non-penetrative - masturbation, kissing, touching
Non contact - showing graphic images, inappropriate language
Grooming - preparing a child for abuse
Define Emotional/psychological abuse
abuse that results in harm or damage to an individual’s emotional and/or mental health causing low self-esteem and anxiety.
Name examples of emotional/psychological abuse
Making fun of a person.
Making someone feel worthless.
Not giving a person a chance to express their views.
Unrealistic expectations.
Comparing them to somebody else.

Define Neglect
Neglect involves the failure to meet a child or adult’s basic needs

Define Financial abuse
The unauthorised improper use of funds, property or any resources belonging to an individual.
Name examples of financial abuse
Theft
Fraud
Changing a person’s will through coercion

Define Institutional abuse
Abuse caused by the rules of the system for a person using that service
Name examples of institutional abuse
Not feeding a person when they want to be fed because of set meal times.
Lone working meaning a person is put in an uncomfortable position with a worker
Define bullying
Abuse that happens more than once

Physical assault

Define discrimination
Treating somebody unfavourably because of a protected characteristic. Can be any form of abuse.
Name examples of discrimination
Excluding an individual because they are black
Harassing somebody because they are a woman
Define Exploitation/mate crime
when an individual is taken advantage of, harmed or abused by another person or persons who they thought were their friend/s
Name examples of mate crime
Befriending a person with a learning disability and then stealing from them.
Befriending a person with a mental illness and then making sexual advances knowing they won’t say “no”
