Unit 7 Definitions Flashcards
Niche of a species
The species Role in a community
Interspecific competition
Competition between different species
Intraspecific competition
Competition within a species (they have the exact same niche)
Mark-release-recapture equation
N=(number marked in first catch x total number in second catch) / number of recaptures in second catch
Assumptions for mark-release-recapture
No migration
No reproduction
Marks are not lost and don’t harm the animal or affect chance of recapture
Sample is large
All members of the population mix randomly and have an equal chance of recapture
Allopatric speciation
Geographical isolation splits population into 2
This prevents interbreeding and separate gene pools form
Different random mutations occur and different selection pressures act on each population
This causes the allele frequency to change
Sympatric speciation
Random mutation within population causes reproductive isolation
This prevents interbreeding and separate gene pools form
New population will pass their alleles on to their offspring and the population will rise
The two populations are two species as they cannot interbreed
