Fredonian Rebellion

A

Early 1827, Edwards and his supporters declared independence from Mexico and the land near Nacogdoches became the Fredonian Republic. Early 1827, Mexican soldiers and militia from Austin’s Colony arrived, Edwards gave up and ran away. It confirmed that Americans were trying to take Texas!

A

He was sent to inspect Texas settlements and report back, came back and said that American settlers outnumbered Mexican settlers, 10 to 1.
His recommendations were:
1. Government place troops in Texas
2. Attract more Mexican settlers to Texas
3. Increase trade between Texas & Mexico.

Law of April 6, 1830

A
  1. Immigrants from the U.S. are banned
  2. All empresario contracts that aren’t completed, are cancelled
  3. Encouraged Mexican & European immigration
  4. Outlawed slavery in Texas
  5. Added more Mexican soldiers/forts in Texas
  6. Added duties to ALL foreign goods entering Texas
    the goal was to stop immigration to Texas.

Stephen F. Austin

A

He sided with the Mexican Govt, against the rebels. He sent a letter to the rebels on Dec. 24, 1826; wanting to know what the rebels were doing and what they intended to do in the future.

Turtle Bayou Resolutions

A
  1. At Turtle Bayou they pledged their allegiance to the Mexican Federalists.
  2. They also said their actions were against Bradburn, not Mexico.
  3. Said they are loyal to Santa Anna (A federalist who is leading a fight against the Centralists.)
