Unit 6, Section 1: Describing Motion and Force Flashcards
motion
when an object’s position changes in comparison to another object
reference point
a place or object used to compare whether something is in motion
force
a push or pull on an object
-measured in Newtons (N)
types of forces
two types
-contact forces
-noncontact forces
contact forces
forces applied when one object actually touches another
friction
a contact force that two surfaces exert on each other when they rub against each other
noncontact forces
applied to an object whether it touches the object or not
gravity
a noncontact force that pulls objects towards each other as a result of their masses
balanced forces
when two forces act on an object and are equal in strength and in the opposite direction
unbalanced forces
when two forces act on an object but the force applied in one direction is stronger than the oher, causing it to move
net force
the combination of all of the forces acting on an object
