Election of 1800

A

the 2 Democratic Rep. Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr defeated federalist John Adams but tied with each other. Jefferson was finally elected as president. Burr became Vice President. This led to the 12th amendment, which requires the president and the vice president of the same party to run on the same ticket. It was a peaceful transfer to power. The house of Representatives broke the tie.
