Unit 6-Motor control Flashcards
What is a motor event?
the consequence of the coordinated and simultaneous activity of many cortical and subcortical areas.
Explain the systems theory
Motor/postural control is specific to each activity and depends on feed forward (feedback, anticipation) and peripheral inputs.
The different systems involved are:
* Ascendent pathways (as studied on unit 4)
* Descendent pathways
* Association areas
In order to plan, coordinate and execute motor programs, an adequate prior
sensory representation is necessary.
Motor mechanisms are directly related to sensory function.
what is postural control?
Postural control is based on adjusting the orientation and position of the internal
segments in order to act in relation to the outside world.
Postural control depends on neurophysiological mechanism to:
- Maintain a stable position (balance) against gravity.
- Produce adjustments that anticipate voluntary movements in the desired
direction: stabilize certain parts of the body to allow movement in others
. - React appropriately and proportionally to unexpected or possible imbalances.
what are the two types of motor systems?
Postural Systems: Control tonic muscles for posture, originating in the brainstem and running medially in the spinal cord. They manage overall body posture and movement.
Movement Systems: Control phasic muscles for specific movements, especially in the hands and feet. They originate in the motor cortex and descend laterally in the spinal cord
what are the 4 different types of motor pathways systems?
1)Cortico reticulospinal system
2)Vestibulospinal system
3)Cortico-rubrospinal system
4)Corticospinal systems
