Indentured servants (Contract workers)
Come from England and Ireland and work on tobacco forms.
-They signed a contract to work on these forms for 4-7 years.
Royal African Company 1672
England and Portegues go to war. Great Britain dominated the slave trade. A private company sponsored by England. Slaves became much cheaper and easier to acquire.
Bacon’s Rebellion (1675-1676)
Nathaniel Bacon, a rebellion of indentured servants. Current and former servants had talked about ill-treatment and not receiving the best.
Virginia Laws on Slavery
-1662 Slavery is inheritable from Mother
-1667 Conversion to christianity does not give Freedom
-1668-69 Punishment for indentured servants vs slaves.
(Indentured slaves=Added years to contract)
(Slave Punishment= The use of violence. Which were beatings since there were no contracts to extend.)
-1682 Ban on import of enslaved christians.
-1705 Illegal to whip indentured servants
-1619 Chattel= Slave people are property, in which all laws that are for property were applied to slaves as well.
Dehumanization
Slave owners and traders dont see slaves as humans. Force slaves to live in shitty places so they wont resist.
(myth- the slaves would be beaten by europeans)
Alexander Falconbridge
Was a slave ship surgeon for 4 of he slave trade voyages between 1782-1787. He eventually becomes an abolitionist after seeing the torment of slaves.
Three-fifths Compromise
Only 3 out of 5 slaves counted toward the population
Fugitive Slave Clause (Constitution)
Enslavers have the right to capture enslaved people who escaped to free states.
Necessary Evil
Slavery is evil, but it is too important for personal wealth and south economy.
David Walker
Abolitionists against slavery, believed that slavery was evil.
Eli Whitney (Cotton Gin)
Invented the cotton gin and a way to make guns faster, easier, and cheaper
Cotton Boom
New textile mills (Factories that made cotton into usable cotton) in the North. Cotton gin used in the south and sent up North and made cotton products

Internal Slave Trade
Within the United States slave trading had begun. To new areas to bring slavery to help the economies.
Yeoman Farmers
Someone who owns land and cannot afford slaves. (smaller amount of land & family farms, grow food and some cash crops)
