A

An ideology used to argue for the new imperialism spreading, using the ideas of Charles Darwin in a social manner of ¨Survival of the fittest” saying that the Europeans and the U.S. had the rights to do this cause of the biological superiority.

A

A colony in Africa owned by King Leopold after invading the the Congo. He used this colony for economic exploitation and made a fortune off it. He also invaded them to convince the Belgian gov to support their colonial expansion.

Berlin Conference

A

Around the time of the scramble to Africa, leaders were worried this would start a war. In order to keep peace in Europe Otto Von Bismark of germany, held the Berlin conference. Here him along with other European powers agreed on colonial boundaries amongst one another.

Suez Canal

A

An 100 mile long canal connecting the Red sea to the Mediterranean sea. A french company managed this project, using the labor of unpaid workers called corvee laborers. This canal was used by the Europeans so they wouldn’t have to travel all the way around Africa. British used for commercial interests.

A

Anti foreigners movement in China. Due to too much heavy presence occurring from foreign country upsetted the population and sparked a rebellion.

Creation of Zulu kingdom

A

Dutch came in and created settlers colonies along the land of the Zulu people. This upsetted the people who lived there and they decided they needed a strong kingdom against the Dutch, therefore creating the Zulu kingdom.

Indian Rebellion of 1857

A

Rooted from the BEIC along with Christian missionaries completely ignoring the Indian and local culture. This led to continued revolt in several cities, and eventually to the end of the BEIC control over India. This led to the British crown taking over, giving the Indians the idea that they would have more of a voice. Eventually there was the realization that there would never be a complete leave of British influence in their society

Tupac Amaru the second´s Rebellion in Peru

A

A rebellion led by the last Incan emperor of Peru… Tupac Amaru the second. Her encouraged the indigenous to stand and revolt against the colonial authorities due to the unfair abuses occurring. The rebellion was not so successful due to the colonials having a better army, however Tupac was a huge figure in america’s history of resistance and oppression.

Xhosa cattle killing movement

A

During the time when the British was fighting with the Xhosa, who didn’t want to ruled by Europeans, towards the end of the fighting the local Xhosa cattle began to get sick and die. They blamed the Europeans for this. The Xhosa began to kill their cattle and destroy crops believing spirits would see this, and decide to remove the British from the land. This resulted in a famine.

A

When raw materials were processed into goods and shipped right back to those who gave the raw materials, those colonies were turned into export economies.

Economic Imperialism

A

Economic Imperialism was when countries would imperalize a new country and colonies just for economic purposes. SO if a place had really good natural resources countries like those in Europe would try to imperialize it. That was the cause for much imperialism in Africa.

Opium wars

A

The opium wars rooted from the Chinese and British having trading conflicts. The Brits had much need for the Chinese products and exports, however the Chinese did not feel the same, therefore the British had to trade using silver. Therefore British found the demand for the drug - Opium. The Chinese did not want this in their country therefore putting restrictions, however the British ignored this. The British had stronger forces then the Chinese and won the war leading to a treaty.

Chinese and Indian Indentured Servitude

A

Due to the fact that there was good opportunity in other countries such as the U.S. . There was a mass population move of Indians and Chinese, however moving was expensive. Through a contracted work however aka indentured servitude they had the ability to move.

Migrant workers

A

During this time many moved to become migrant workers. Aka moving simply for work. For example in Argentina Industrial workers from Italy would come to Argentina and would settle in the cities. Also people from Japan would go to Hawaii and work on plantations.

A

An act set out by the US. gov. saying that Chinese laborers are not allowed to stay in the US. and work for more than an allotted amount of time.

A

When people moved over all over from other countries they came along with their culture. Many of those who were from the same region would stay together and create a small community staying on the grounds of their culture. For example Little Italy, and China Town

White Australia Policy

A

During this time there were many Chinese laborers working in Australia, and this people who lived there along with the government. So therefore to limit ¨non- british immigration¨they implemented this policy to keep Australia white.
