Unit 6 - DNA Structure and Protein Synthesis Flashcards
During what stage of the cell cycle does Replication occur?
The S Phase.
Where in the cell does Replication occur?
The Nucleus
The sugar in DNA is…
deoxyribose
The sugar in RNA is…
ribose
Three main differences between RNA and DNA:
I. Dna is double stranded, Rna is single stranded.
II. DNA has Thymine (“T”), RNA has Uracil (“U”).
III. DNA’s sugar is Deoxyribose, RNA’s is Ribose.
What is the function of mRNA?
Messenger: to carry information from the nucleus.
What is the function of tRNA?
Transport: transports Amino Acids to ribosomes
What is the purpose of rRNA?
Ribosomal: assembles Amino Acids.
How many Amino Acids are there?
20.
What does a codon code for?
Amino Acid.
What does a gene code for?
Protein.
What is an anti-codon?
It pairs with a codon.
Where does translation take place?
Ribosomes in cytoplasm
What is a pointshift mutation?
A change in one single DNA base pair. (ATG -> ATT)
What is a frameshift mutation?
When a base (allele, letter) is added or deleted.
